I've been trying to think of one word that describes the SBA conference 2016 that I just recently attended out in Minnesota. One word that can best characterize my feelings toward all the sessions, people and the crucial roles they each of them play in the bigger picture we call “Spina Bifida” and I haven’t been able to. I believe the SBA’s conference theme, “Beyond all limits” says it all and says a lot. So much! It's hard for me to even gather my thoughts to write this. However, I know that from experiences is how we help others and each of us with Spina Bifida has been given a great responsibility to teach others, without us even realizing that we are. From our lives, doctors learn how to push boundaries and take risk, to help us reach our full potential. Medical professionals work tirelessly since the day we are born, trying to make our lives as rich as possible. And most importantly our families, since day one have been on our side battling every single battle, so we can have a chance to win the war. I can’t express enough the importance my family had and still has in my life. I can’t thank them enough for the long nights, stressful days and sacrifices they have made just so I can be here. There is so much power in that. I truly believe that being born with spina bifida has strengthen my family in every way. It has made us into critical thinkers who always look for solutions. Spina Bifida gave us an attitude of never holding back, always moving forward at all cost and giving up is not an option. Some phrases used [...]
Tony Torres, WCMX Athlete attended the RISE Adaptive Sports WCMX World Championship 2016 in Dallas/Fort Worth Texas from April 22-24, 2016. It was non-profits 3 annual competition where athletes from all over the world came to showcase their skills and talent. Rise Adaptive Sports holds twice a week clinics in preparation to this event. During practice you could see people from all over conversing as the athletes took the park with their tricks.  For so many, it was the only event all year around that they could attend and compete. WCMX is a fledging sport that is picking up speed yearly. More and more adaptive skaters take to the sport and with that are changing people’s perspective about people with disabilities. No longer is being confined to a wheelchair limits you to anything, because with attitude and wheels these athletes literally fly. For Tony, it was an unforgeable experience, amazing. This was his first year for him to see the competition first hand. His cousin Anthony and him, took the park along with the other athletes and immediately felt the comradery between all the folks involved. It felt more like a family that hadn’t seen each other in a while. During practice Tony attempted some bigger tricks that he was use too, but fell mostly everytiome., It wasn’t to his last final run, where his spark was lit and started to run through the park with issues. This is the run that brought him second place in the intermediate class. To attend and to bring back to Florida the silver was something Tony never expected, however, he brought back some of the adrenaline and information needed to start working towards a team Florida. Next year, [...]
